Vault Hierarchy
rating: +4+x

Overview

Due to their unique mission of ensuring the continuity of the Insurgency under all circumstances and requirement to operate autarkic and independent of the normal Administration and Command structure for indefinite periods, the Vaults have their own internal hierarchies. Unlike the Greater Insurgency, they are centralized and tighter to accommodate for their usually limited personnel resources and self-sufficient operation.

The individual ranks of the hierarchy are denoted by how far removed they are from the ultimate authority for each Vault, the Vault Overseer. The exact roles of each rank including their duties, privileges and relation to security clearance are malleable and tailored to each Vault's unique needs. The Vault chain of command applies universally within the Vaults, even to non-Vault personnel, regardless of previous conflicting orders.

Ranks

Viermal (Basic Designation)

(The commonly used pronunciation has become stretched to three syllables, vi-er-mal)

Viermals are the bottom rung of the hierarchy and cover a broad spectrum of staff, including, amongst others, guards, clerks, research assistants, nurses, technicians and other service personnel. Viermal rank is roughly equal in standing to Delta designation. Besides loyalty and willingness to bring the necessary sacrifice, there are little requirements in skill or experience in becoming a Viermal.

Viermals do not bear any special insignia and use the same emblem that marks Vault inventory and non-personnel personages.

Triput (Progressive Designation)

Triput Badge

Triputs are generally the senior equivalents of Viermals, e.g. sergeants, specialist engineers, researchers, doctors and some project heads. Depending on circumstances, Triput rank can equal a Delta or Gamma designation. Suitable as they may be for their tasks, most Triputs are not considered special for Insurgency standards.

Triputs bear a single mark on their insignia.

Dvís (Advanced Designation)

(The commonly used pronunciation drops the v, becoming dys)

Dvis.png

Dvís Badge

Dvíses have special responsibilities that require extended authorisations and competences or were recognized as elites in their respective fields, be it research, special operations or other tasks, usually as officers or in other administration and command roles. As such, the rank of Dvís corresponds to Gamma or Beta Designation. It is expected of each Dvís to perform ahead of their peers and inspire them as role models.

Dvíses' insignia have two marks.

Hapax (Leading Designation)

Hapax.png

Hapax Badge

Hapaxes answer directly to the Overseer and are as such extensions of their will and trusted confidantes. The rank of Hapax is at least equal to Beta Designations, but may in some situations have capacities on equal footing with Alpha members. Each Hapax is an exceptional member of the Insurgency with an extensive service record in- and outside the Vaults.

The insignia of Hapaxes feature diagonal marks.

Child (Overseer Designation)

(When applicable, this title is gendered, i.e. becomes Son or Daughter)

Overseer's Badge

The Overseer outranks everyone else inside their Vault. They possess the power to overrule all other orders and instructions touching their Vault, no matter the original giver's authority. However, their authority outside the Vaults is severely limited, usually being treated as Cell Directors; Overseers don't have an Alpha Designation, except for those who are also founding members of the Insurgency.

Besides a position outside the normal Insurgency's command structure (necessitated by the Vault's unique purpose), Overseers also enjoy the Diagram's protection, just like the Vaults. Whilst it only extends to the post of the Overseer and not necessarily the person occupying it, it means that no Vault will ever be without Overseer.

Children's insignia is a stylistic representation of the Diagram.

Sections

Every Vault is divided into respective specialised sections. Personnel is frequently assigned to individual sections instead of the Vault as a whole, which is denoted by the section's emblem being added to their rank insignia; in rare cases, multiple emblems may be used to denote more complex assignments. Sections in particular are denoted by a slash behind the Vault's name, which may also be used to specify section membership of assets, staff and clearances.

There are too many sections to list here, most of them unique and without specially assigned personnel, so only the most common sections will be listed below.

Deputies and Deputy Aides

Deputy (l.) and Deputy Aide (r.) Badges

In situations where a section requires extra attention and administration, Overseers may appoint Deputies to handle the day-to-day operations. Their insignia bear sets of three red triangles for Deputies or one triangle for Deputy Aides. They are usually Hapaxes or Dvíses.

Medical Section

The logistical section is charged with distributing cargo and personnel within the Vault, managing inventory and storage spaces, strategic stockpile of resources and supporting other sections. It is frequently cooperating with logistical sections from other Vaults. The logistical section bears stacked boxes to each side of the Vault emblem.

Martial Section

Martial Badge

The martial section encompasses all garrisoned military and security forces. Where applicable, it interoperates with the naval and aerial sections. Their symbol has been varyingly interpreted as the spears of a phalanx, a palisade or ammunitions.

Industrial Section

Industrial Badge

The industrial section handles the processing and refinement of raw resources into any form of required raw produce needed by the Vault. It is tightly integrated into every section involved in the production of goods. Some Vaults provide surplus or specific materials to each other and the rest of the Insurgency. This section is represented by the cross-section of an anvil or rolled steel joist.

Agronomical Section

The agronomical section services its Vault's agri- and aquaculture and livestock where applicable, mostly to supply food and organic resources required for the Vault's self-sufficiency. It normally works hand-in-hand with the Industrial section.

Technical Section

Visual Record Missing

The technical section operates and maintains and repairs its Vault's internal systems and assists with engineering tasks.

Observational Section

Observational Badge

The observational section monitors and provides intelligence on its Vault and surrounding. The nature of the surveillance and measurements varies with the Vault's specific needs. Particular metrics of interest are usually within the purview of more specialized sections. A pair of eyes marks badges of members belonging to the observational section.

Uniforms

Owing to the extremely breadth of activities Vault personnel might engage in, Vault uniform regulations prescribe no concrete sets of unifroms, but rather describe a set of 7 visually distinct markings named after parts of plate armour that can be applied to and must be incorporated in every work uniform: a bevor, and a pair of each spaulders, vambraces and tassets. The way these are incorporated into work attire for practicality and distinctness is up to the Overseer's discretion. Unless interfering with other purposes (in particular concealment), these parts should be in a shade of red.

Bevor

The bevor must cover the throat and may extend up and down to cover the mouth and clavicle, respectively. The bevor usually takes the form of a neckerchief or scarf, but may also be a cravat or tie. Differentiated collars are technically allowed but not practical outside of formal occupations. Armoured operatives may occasionally use helmet- or torso-mounted throat guards.

Spaulders

The spaulders are supposed to be a shoulder markings bearing the employee's respective badge. Its further design is not specified, meaning elaborate epaulettes are usually foregone for handier shoulder straps. Badges are IR-retroreflective and besides the default dark white-on-black colour scheme also available in a bright black-on-white alternative. The bottom part of the badge has an employees written on it. On the left half is the assumed name in written in locally common script, consisting of potential academic, military or religious titles, given names (usually as initials) and the full family name(s) of the employee, whereas the right side bears the simplified variant of their name in all capital letters.

Vambraces

The pair of vambraces must be either a visibly distinct lower half of a sleeve covering the full arm, or a separate article of clothing worn around the lower arm, possibly in the form of a long glove reaching to the elbows. Replacement with bracelets is explicitly disapproved. In warmer climates, fishnet sleeves or breathable straps wrapped around the lower arm are recommended as code-compliant replacements.

Tassets

The tassets are the by far the uniform regulations which shows the widest range of ways to interpret its peculiarities. Described as pieces of attire affixed to each side of the waist that must at minimum cover the hips, they frequently take the form of narrow decorative straps clipped to the waist. Other forms they may take are a sash with an end dangling off each side, merely visual markings on aprons and lab coats, or parts of high-waisted skirts.
