2023 Public Domain Day Contest

Welcome to the 2023 Public Domain Day Celebration Contest! As a community dedicated to collaborating on fiction free of restrictive copyright, we are going to start into the new year by making use of the newly available works of old.

Posting opens Sunday, January 1st at 0:01 UTC and ends the 31th January at 23:59 UTC. Voting ends two weeks later, the 14th February at 23:59 UTC.

Contest Status: Ended

Submissions:

  1. Place: City of Ruin by ZescZesc
  2. Place: Demons Gate by Meta WonderratMeta Wonderrat

In order to participate, your article must must either reference or make use of media that entered the public domain in 2023. For the purpose of this contest, we consider the copyright duration is the creator's life plus 70 years (as is in most countries), but you may also use anything that became public domain in the few countries with longer copyright protection. If you're not sure what enters Public Domain in 2023, the Wikipedia list is a good start, but you can simply search for creators who died in 1952.

Rules:

  • All submissions must fulfil the contest's premise and be tagged with public-domain23. In case it isn't immediately obvious, please state your chosen source(s) in the comments of your submission.
  • We accept collaborations, but no author may have more than one submission to their name.
  • Submissions must be reasonable, e.g. no empty hubs, WIP articles or things entirely unrelated to our wiki.
  • The article with the most upvotes by the end of the voting period wins. In case of a draw, the win is shared.
  • Refrain from systematic advertising, self-voting, downvoting of the competition, substantial edits of released works, or any other disruptions of the contest.
  • Submissions may not be deleted for the duration of the contest (except when against the site rules, of course), neither by the author nor through negative ratings.
