i myself was not sure about this one. I was going for "playground legend", with the story getting more outlandish the fewer people were there to witness it.

The thing is…why is there a summoning circle, what is the oil? Why is there oil? I get the idea but, (just like us) it is very vague. In the end at least. The tubes are almost as big as a child, and totally does not have a body inside, definitely. See what I did there? Make it obvious, but still unclear.

The answer to what you seek lies with the question of "why". There is a reason and only a few actors on the paranormal stage could do something like this.

What was the result of the fire? One kid missing, apparently summoned through something and people talking.
Who would have an interest in using abandoned houses to do their research?
Who would upon the discovery burn the house down, but do it after some of its secrets were discovered?
Who would want a kid that reached for the clearly magical, when all others turned away?

In what order did things happen before kids were lead to find the house? The answer explains the evening of the fire.
