I'm currently short on time (only really got a breather today), so why not try anything funny?

I created a sandbox for this thing. The first person to stumble upon this thread gets to either
A) Make a name for an Item OR
B) Write the first sentence(s) of the Usage section (the item will be called Placeholder, Y/N, {$Item} or something to that effect then until the article is finished.)

After that, everyone checking by here may append to the article unless they were the last to have edited it. An addition can be anything from one sentence to a short paragraph. (Obviously, keep it coherent to the things others added before!)

Move on to the Report when you feel there's nothing to add to the Usage anymore. Once that one is done, we'll fill out the Infobox in cooperation and start smoothing the edges before this is posted to the mainsite.

(@Meta, @Neonach and @Mario: y'all gonna get replies eventually. Patience is a virtue.)

Nothing of importance going on here. I'm trying to use ReadyBot to integrate WikiDot's automatically generated RSS feed for the forum into Discord.

Why Discord, out of all things, does not simply allow me to use the RSS feed directly is beyond me.

The purpose of this room is too discuss the present state and future plans regarding the official chat rooms of the wiki.

Current Status

Discord

First things first: Discord is running swimmingly. I moved everything important (rules, channel overview, the privacy-focused access thingy) over here and configure the Widget. Whilst the behind the scenes is still a terrible mess, it continues to be the main go-to place for most people.

IRC

How is #base-six doing? I just checked in on the IRC1, and there were only two people in there, Hexick and "Chav", with not much action going on. Am I right to assume it is basically dead? I'm not sure if it's worthwhile to keep the IRC when it is not used. It served well, but perhaps it's time to retire now, especially since it's apparently hosted at an domain outside our control.

Future Plans

The future plans are source from a certain "Agent Smith": Bots and Matrix. Also, more cross-wiki integration, but that requires some innovations here too, especially in the field of announcing and previewing articles. And last but not least updating policy and making contingencies.

Matrix

We should explore setting up a community using Matrix. Matrix is rather privacy friendly2 and less intrusive than most alternatives. At the same time, the wide variety of clients means it provides a User Experience befitting the 202th decade, even for our not so tech-savvy users. But the most important thing is the support for bridges to other services — it is possible to intertwine the Matrix community with our already existing Discord server (and potentially IRC) in a way that makes them become for all practical purposes one. This would counteract fracturing the community whilst widening access.

The current plan would progress as follows:

Set up a matrix room for coordination.
This can be done by me alone, but as this step provides everyone unfamiliar to the service the chance to get some experience and gauge matrix suitability for our needs, I'd love to see some participation. You're being voluntold.

Bridge a test room on Matrix to a test channel on our Discord server.
I'm currently eyeing t2bot to do the bridging, but if that doesn't works, we have alternatives to probe.

Decide on a homeserver for the community.
Ideally, we would host one ourselves, but that seems outside our reach as of now (vis infra). I think unredacted.org would be a fitting name to host us (also, the organization behind it is okay) but again, there is an entire phase dedicated to sorting this permanent decision out, so there is no need for haste right now.

Make a doppelgänger of our Discord server and bridge it.

Promote the resulting unholy amalgamation of services and write proper explanations and introduction on the wiki.

Bots

With the exceptions of Discord's in-house Pronoun Picker bot, the Discord server is currently botless. Automating things could greatly cut back on administrative overhead and unlock new potentials, so this option should be investigated further.

Create a PRD for the bot(s):
We know that we want one, and probably need on too, but which functionality is required? Many thing to consider, like: automatically assigning roles, fetching the wiki's RSS feed and displaying it, mManaging the time zones table for users, etc.

Evaluate existing bots at their fitness for these tasks
Discord has a vivid ecosystem of bots already which have to be considered regarding their usability and alignment to our values

If no bot(s) satisfying our needs exist, we'll have to develop one ourselves. Besides the standards issues of setting up a git, creating viable code and arguing about codestyle and language, this would also leave us with one burning question: Where to host the bot. I don't see us currently in a position that would allow us to reliable have our own server to host stuff on, and even if we were to rent hosting space somewhere, that still requires money that somebody (not me) would have to pay.

Preparing for the worst

Finally, we should make some back-up plans in case if various adversities that could affect our chat rooms. I think the current rules should cover the worst and I can't identify and credible inside-threats besides myself, but we should not get lazy on those domains either. The main concern however comes from the outside: what happens if some outside force attempts to harass and raid our chat rooms? Besides dedicated raiding communities and dumb bots, there is always the threat that some confic-adjacent community suddenly decides to pay us a visit. If it's because of some perceived offence, we have to deal with loads of brigading of people with, ahem, varying levels of competence at disruption, whereas even friendly visitors (imagine a popular content creator covering us or even promoting us) could overwhelm our current capacities by sheer mass alone.

Anything else?

This wraps it up for now. Any input is of course greatly appreciated. And yes, this is entirely serious, as blown out of proportion as it might seem. Stagnation is regress, and the off-wiki community are our most precious resource.

Footnotes

1. WTF decided to just blacklist all Tor exit nodes?

2. Though there exists criticism. But we're not an actual Insurgency in need of tight OpSec, after all.

The "I-got-this challenge"

Since the "spooktober contest 2019" revealed a certain time problem, i thought of something a bit more open ended. Since my last attempt at an "open collaboration (Laughter in the Tomb)" failed i thought i should not attempt something resembling that collaboration and try something different. So, this is my attempt to do that.

There is no price to this (nether to pay nor to gain) other than perhaps a few good, new stories.

The challenge

Write a story with a confident protagonist

Use existing material as inspiration or set-dressing

Have something go horribly wrong, with the protagonist remaining confident

Bonus points if the protagonist is unaware that something is horribly wrong and in order to figure out what is wrong the story requires knowledge of external material

You may kill your protagonist as appropriate

Link to all "required reading" in a post attached to the article (be specific, if appropriate)

This challenge is open ended, so it is never to late to participate. (That means you too, lurker in 2022). The question, "is this still active?" must never be asked. Unless otherwise stated, yes, yes it is still active.

Whether this has any effect or just disappears into the night, the challenge is issued.

And remember:

There is no such thing as a failed experiment, as long as valid data was gained from said experiment. ~Adam Savage (paraphrased)

Okay.

1. I need a summary of our site's situation from the Staff. Issues should be listed and appropriately labeled for brevity. We will begin discussing solutions to address them afterwards on a separate thread. Miranda and Xythinien, I will depend heavily on your view of our current situation to guide me as I update myself with what's been going on. The two of you will use one post containing the full situation report, so help each other out.

2. I'm kindly asking the rest of the crew to wait until I conclude the Staff's discussion on this thread before everyone else joins. If there are issues which you think we have missed, please create a single post and follow the same guidelines.

Use The Format Below:

Situation Report for October

hide

Issue

Details:

Format Code:

[[collapsible show="Situation Report for October" hide="hide"]] ++ **Issue** * **Details:** [[/collapsible]]

Clinical Tone: Does The CI Need It?

The authorship can be divided into two categories: those who use clinical tone, and those who use clinical tone but dislike it. Reading comments on certain articles, it seems that we include a good clinical tone as making for a good article, much like SCP-style, albeit with admittedly weaker style. Victor Strate and EdAWACS, especially, have displayed the clinical style often with their article.

Now, I've brought this up once or twice, but do we really need the tone for Items to be clinical? I mean, not that we should phase them out altogether (perhaps we should), but think of the possible alternatives to it. Think of romanticizing Items, for instance, forgoing the mindset that 'bah, they are just tools for us' for 'this Item is magnificent let's love it'.

I will elaborate more on this if discussion is good.

So, as we are slowly rewriting what we thought to be worth keeping, we can start thinking new canon for the CI.

To elaborate, the current state of the CI universe is a bit lacking. The CI universe and writings seem unfitting for an insurgency dedicated to the task of invoking chaos through the exploitation of anomalous items tone-wise, and there are too much elements of LOLsurgency.

So far Heartful has suggested of posting an article on the SCP Foundation site depicting a brand new general canon for us to follow. The problem is that 1) we have different ideas on how the new canon is going to be 2) nobody really offers a good idea of what work to spearhead the CI canon on the Skip site.

It's about time we should care about this, so…discuss.

After over a month of dealing with problems and asking the kind people at #basesix about the new theme, I think it's finally time. Heartful, EdAWACS, you're my top priority - I'll readily answer any questions.

The new theme isn't really much. We have an off grey background with a little accent and dark text, and this was to answer the main cause for changing: grey text on a darker grey background is terrible to users. Since we've tried the white text on black background before, why not try something else?

Everything is practically inverted: black is white, white is black. From the headers, to the topbar options, to the buttons.

I'm no expert, though, so if you have seen any bugs like unreadable text, buttons or options, tell me.

Tabviews have been fucking fixed. This is in coordination with the Site Overhaul that's currently happening, in which you may expect changes in the features of the site, the staff members, and the chat room.

About the threads being locked, though: it's a decision made that we want to distance ourselves from being a carefree, happy-go-lucky joke-a-thon site, and we need to limit the idleness on the site in favor of getting actual work done.

Below is the list of threads which are currently being locked:

The Quiet Thread

How shifty are koalas?

A headache (I have to go ahead and delete this, due to it being my own dweebiness in the first place)

Rants

Stupidity

CI Polandball (we seem to cannot Polandball of yet)

Thread (the meta Forum Thread)

For staff, I will also like for you to consider seconding the lock on these threads:

Video Game Recommendation Thread (Locked)

Insurgency Pets (I'm so sorry. Locked)

CI Theme song (Locked)

Attack on Titan (Locked)

Strange Internet VIdeo thread (Locked)

Site (Locked)

Breaktime at Cafe across Basesix (Locked)

CI Wiki inspired by GOC? (Deleted for no content)

Tales, Items and Websites (Locked)

These are the ones I'm not sure about:

CI Conspiracies (Locked)

Achievements Unlocked (Locked)

Baaaaad Stuff (Not Locked)

And finally, the ones I want to endorse:

Staff Break

Under-Appreciated Items/Tales

Avatar Introductions

Funding

Weapons and Equipment

It's been a while since I posted something official. I'd like to make it aware that for the next two months, there will be dates that will be significant to us and our site.

First off, holy shit it's almost Valentine's. Ed, mind if we blanket the Intelligentsia Project for a Valentine's-themed challenge? <3?

Next, I think we're going to celebrate the actual first year anniversary of the site somewhere around late February or early March. We should do yay stuff.

A while back it was mentioned that the CI is a bunch of decentralized cells working together.

I would like to make the first foray into this area by suggesting at least the logo for the SF cell of the CI

Here is the logo I drafted:

+ show block

– hide block

Alternate version

+ show block

– hide block

Okay, SCP is having a GOI contest. I suggest we get 4 people (I automatically call a spot) to participate. Note that you must be a member of SCP. I think we should do the Group Of Interest "Nobody." If you don't like my choice, voice your opinion. We are not doing The Chaos Insurgency, under any circumstances.

It's come to me that our 'ASSAULT' wing isn't exactly laid out in detail; I don't even know what to call our version of a task force. We should start with that, and address some of the other issues with ASSAULT.
